ARCHIVED - Murcia stadium shortlisted for Spain-Portugal 2030 World Cup bid
The Enrique Roca stadium in Murcia has been chosen as a possible venue for the group stage matches

As Spain and Portugal wait on tenterhooks while their bid to jointly host the 2030 World Cup, the Region of Murcia has scored its own victory by being shortlisted as a venue to hold the group stage matches.
The regional president, Fernando López Miras, announced the exciting news on July 6 that the Enrique Roca stadium in the city of Murcia is being considered, and highlighted that the venue complies with all official requirements, both in terms of the capacity to host the matches and also because of the wealth of local hotels, hospitals and its proximity to the International Airport of the Region of Murcia-Juan de la Cierva, “which continues to grow and is amply prepared to host the passenger traffic that this great world event could entail”.
As well as the Enrique Roca, the Pinatar Arena and La Manga Club facilities are also being “called to host sub-venues for this World Cup,” which would provide an enormous economic boost to the entire Region.
To ensure that all the details are taken care of, the president has called a meeting next week with all the major players such as the Murcia City Council, the Real Murcia Football Club, La Manga Club and Pinatar Arena.
“The work began a long time ago, maintaining contacts with the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Higher Sports Council but, of course, there is still a long way to go and, for this, we count on everyone, how could it be otherwise,” Mr López Miras said.
“The Region of Murcia is synonymous with work, effort and perseverance and, in this land, sport has always been linked to success, more so in recent times with a whole golden generation of athletes who are giving us so much joy,” he added.
The hosts of the World Cup won’t be announced by FIFA until next year but if the joint bid is won, it will be the first time Spain has held the event since 1982.
