ARCHIVED - New seafront apartment blocks spark outrage in Orihuela Costa
Residents have blasted the "ugly monstrosities" arguing apartment blocks are ruining the coastline in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province
Angry residents have hit out at the the authorities for allowing the construction of a nine-storey apartment block on the seafront in Orihuela Costa.
AVOCA Neighborhood Association Orihuela Costa in Action shared photographs of one of the builds under construction in Cala Mosca on its Facebook page, and a second showing the altered view of the coastline, captioning the shots, "metamorphosis on the coast...the new horizon is gaining presence".
The post immediately attracted dozens of comments from angry residents, concerned about the impact of new builds on traffic, infrastructure and the local environment.
"Only one way in and out on to the N332! The traffic is bad enough now, just imagine what it is going to be like with all these properties going up," wrote one worried local.
"Very sad that these monstrous apartment blocks are being allowed to ruin our coastline. It’s a tragedy. Should not be allowed. A tragedy. Too many greedy people in this world," said another, supported by a fellow resident, who warned that the build will "obviously set a precedence for the building and destruction of the land from Punta Prima to Cala Mosca. Be aware friends this is what's to come! Protest, protest, protest and please use your vote - we are being ignored!".
Meanwhile, another social media user questioned how planning permission was granted for "the ugliest apartment blocks on the coast" that "block the sunlight and anyone's view from behind", concluding that "money talks".
But in addition to aesthetic concerns, there are also fears over the health provision with an influx of new residents.
"Where are the health centres needed for all the extra people who require health care? This means for those of us who are residents our services just get worse and worse," added another concerned local.
It's not clear who the developer is or when the build is likely to be completed.
