ARCHIVED - Partial lunar eclipse visible in Spain on November 19
This will be the longest partial eclipse experienced in Spain in almost 600 years
When Spain experiences its full moon on Friday November 19, it will move into the Earth’s shadow, creating a near-total lunar eclipse. Visible in North and South America, Australia and parts of Europe and Asia, star gazers will be privy to the longest partial lunar eclipse in 580 years, which is set to last for just over six hours.
The eclipse will begin in Spain at 7:02am but it will not be visible to the naked eye until the full shadow of the Earth begins to fall on the top of the Moon at 8:18am. The arc of the Earth’s shadow will extend until the peak of the eclipse at 10:02am, when more than 97% of the Moon will be fully darkened, leaving only a small strip of light on the left side according to Nasa.
As the eclipse comes to an end, the Earth’s shadow will gradually move away to the lower right of the Moon, which will emerge completely at 1:03pm. The conclusion of the celestial event will be hard to see, however, as dawn will have broken at this point, hampering visibility.
The last total lunar eclipse occurred on May 26 of this year. Known as a ‘Blood Moon’, it looked like a red disc in the sky and occurred when the Earth, Moon and Sun were perfectly aligned. The partial eclipse this week is part of an ‘almost tetrad’ – a series of four big lunar eclipses over a two-year period. Partial eclipses occur when the Earth moves between the Moon and the Sun so that all three are in a straight line, but not precisely aligned.
