ARCHIVED - Petition for Spain to stop using animals in Three Kings parades
Dozens of famous artists in Spain have called for the practice to be banned
Several big names in the cultural and performing arts spheres throughout Spain have penned an open letter to the heads of Town Halls across the country asking them to stop using live animals in the Three Kings parades and processions, since this common practice puts citizen safety at risk in addition to threatening the well-being of the wildlife involved.
Traditionally on January 5, elephants, camels and even reindeer are decked out in their finery and paraded through the streets of Spain, an event which most vets agree leads to “suffering and stress” as a result of the “environments of bustle, loud music and asphalt”.
Under the slogan 'More ethics, less danger' the Franz Weber Foundation has collected the support and signature of dozens of well-known personalities from the cultural field to issue an open letter calling on municipalities to address this issue and reflect on the consequences of using live animals for entertainment.
