ARCHIVED - Price gap between low-cost petrol stations and normal ones shoots up in Murcia
Drivers in the Region of Murcia are benefiting from more low-cost filling stations
The exponential rise in fuel prices across Spain in recent months has led to more and more automated petrol stations cropping up, as companies strive to reduce costs by cutting down on manpower. The shift away from traditional filling stations has become increasingly prominent in the Region of Murcia, where the difference between the prices offered by automatic services and manned ones has reached record figures.
Through analysing fuel prices around Spain, the National Association of Automatic Service Stations (Aesae) has concluded that drivers in Murcia are some of those achieving the most bang for their buck, since the difference is approximately 15 cents per litre between automatic and traditional filling stations, for both petrol and diesel.
Overall, Murcia is the tenth province in all of Spain with the greatest price difference between fuel stations, with the national average rising to a record breaking 8%.
According to the president of Aesae, Manuel Jiménez Perona, Murcia is benefiting from an explosion of new openings in recent months, as the more competition there is, the lower the prices. To this end, Valencia continues to be one of the provinces with the best prices, since there is “a direct relationship between the competition exercised by traditional gas stations” and automated ones.
Automatic filling stations now account for more than 12.5% of the total across Spain and with a price difference of about 13 cents per litre, the average driver can expect savings of more than 300 euros per year.
