ARCHIVED - Rain, wind and plummeting temperatures: Spain weather outlook March 4-6
Several communities in Spain have been put on alert for strong gusts and heavy rainfall
After two months of unseasonably high temperatures and dry weather, the outlook has changed considerably in the first week of March, with a DANA bringing a polar air trough and Mediterranean storms this weekend. Several provinces have been issued with weather warnings for Friday March 4, with the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia both on yellow alert for heavy rain and coastal phenomena, while areas of Andalucía could experience gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour.
Overall, Spain is in for a wet and windy weekend, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasting snow in the Cantabrian mountain range and the Pyrenees. Temperatures will plummet in the eastern part of the country, according to Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo, who says Friday will be “a cold day, fully winter, with temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees below normal for the season.
“At dawn there will be frosts in a good part of the northern half and during the day it will not reach 15 degrees in large areas of the interior.”
Saturday March 5
Weak rains are expected on Saturday, more concentrated in the Cantabrian and Pyrenees mountain systems and the Canary Islands. The instability will also continue along the Mediterranean coast and showers are expected early in the day in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, which will likely spread to southern Aragon, the Valencian Community, the Murcian Region and eastern Andalucía as the day goes on.
There will be a general drop in temperature on Saturday; the islands will experience the warmest days while at night the mercury is expected to drop to sub-zero in northern provinces.
Sunday March 6
The skies will remain cloudy throughout Sunday in much of the country, with widespread rainfall forecast in “the southwest of Andalucía, the Strait and Melilla, with possible storms in the Gulf of Cadiz”. Strong and persistent rain will continue on the Mediterranean coast, with weaker showers predicted for Cantabria and mountainous areas of the Canary Islands.
The maximum temperatures "will drop in the central east and southeast", while the winds will be light, picking up strength in coastal areas.
