ARCHIVED - Renfe plans high-speed low-cost link between Alicante and Madrid
The rail company is also looking into a high-speed service between Alicante and Galicia
State-owned rail company Renfe has revealed it plans to introduce a low-cost AVE service between Alicante and Madrid, and is also looking into a service between the province capital and Galicia.
Although there is still no date for the implementation of these city links, Renfe's High Speed director, Francisco Arteaga, confirmed the company is "working towards" service links with Spain's capital and the top western corner of the country, and that whilst the launch of the service is "on the horizon", it would be "reckless" to set a date.
However, the rail firm confirmed a high-speed Alicante-Madrid service could become a reality in a "few months".
The Galicia line, meanwhile, could take longer due to the fact the Chamartín tunnel in Madrid is still under construction.
"Once the tunnel is operational, it will allow us to connect the north with the south and the east with the west," explained the Renfe director, adding that the company is also studying a connection with Valencia.
