ARCHIVED - Ryanair cuts carbon emissions in Spain with electric ground handling
The new systems have been implemented in Alicante and Andalucía airports
Irish budget travel airline Ryanair has taken a huge leap against climate change by unveiling its all-electric handling system in eleven European airports, many of which are located in Spain. As of this week, Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Mallorca, Seville, Santiago, Valencia, Amsterdam Schipol, Göteborg-Landvetter and Oslo airports will all feature electric-powered baggage vehicles and plane push tractors which will drastically reduce the airline’s carbon footprint.
In a bid to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050, Ryanair has invested 7.3 million euros in the new sustainable technology, making Azul Handling, Ryanair's handling partner in Spain and Portugal, "the first handling company with zero carbon emissions in Spain".
"This will allow us to offer different changes and ecological initiatives in these eight large Spanish headquarters, which will mean a saving in emissions of 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year”, according to the airline.
Ryanair has invested heavily in the fight against climate change, and its recent outlay of nearly 20 billion euros in state-of-the-art aircraft aims to radically reduce fuel consumption, by 16% per seat, and noise pollution by 40%. With all of these savings, the fleet will still be able to carry 4% more passengers.
