ARCHIVED - Sanchez pressures the EU to take action over soaring electricity prices
Electricity, gas and food costs continue to skyrocket in Spain
As winter rapidly approaches in Spain with a noticeable drop in temperatures, households are preparing to crank up the heating with a degree of trepidation since the price of electricity has reached an all-time high with no signs of slowing. Gas and fuel costs have also skyrocketed while consumer organisations have warned that food, beverages and even toys will be far more expensive this Christmas.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, has pinned all his hopes on a range of tax measures aimed at reducing costs for energy suppliers so that customer bills don’t rise, and he has insisted that by the end of the year, electricity expenses will be the same as 2018.
To alleviate the pressure, Sanchez has once again appealed to Brussels to change the electricity pricing system at the European level, but he revealed on Thursday October 21 that it doesn’t look like the EU will be coming to the rescue anytime soon.
The energy crisis will be discussed at the Autumn European Council which begins this week, but the president has conceded that any measures decided upon won’t be implemented until December at the earliest.
“We would like to go faster”, he said, “but in Brussels the steps are taken at a less intense pace than we would like".
While European leaders argue about the solution, electricity prices in Spain continue to soar, rising about 200 euros per megawatt hour for the ninth consecutive day on Friday October 22.
Meanwhile, electric companies have warned that they will have to begin rising prices for larger consumers, while Iberdrola has agreed to avoid the hikes on the condition that the government doesn’t follow through on what it considers “harmful taxes.”
