ARCHIVED - Spain all-inclusive alcohol ban: these are the areas affected
Alcohol consumption will be limited on certain islands in Spain to clamp down on antisocial behaviour
Britons heading to sunny Spain on holiday this year will be subject to the new alcohol limits in many all-inclusive resorts, but the regional government has clarified that rather than applying to the entirety of Mallorca, the rules will only be enforced in Magaluf and El Arenal, and of course the Balearic party island of Ibiza.
The legislation, which was initially signed off on pre-Covid but is only now being enforced, will limit all-inclusive guests to six alcoholic beverages per day – three at lunch and three at dinner – in a bid to reduce the “issues of over-consumption of alcohol,” according to HotelManagement.net.
In addition, happy hours and two-for-one drinks promotions will be prohibited, advertising party boats is banned and shops won’t be allowed to sell alcohol between 9.30pm and 8am.
A Balearic Islands government spokesperson said that the law would “force a real change in the tourism model of those destinations”.
Balearic Islands Tourism Minister Iago Negueruela said in London last week: “We want British tourists. We don’t want this type of tourism. British tourism is essential for our islands.
“We share with the British Government the view that some images of British tourists are embarrassing. We want to put a stop to bad behaviour.
“From April to May this year we will increase the police presence in these areas and the number of inspectors.
“We will have zero tolerance for tourism excesses.”
While the rules may be off-putting for many Brits who pay a premium for their all-inclusive stays in Spain, which traditionally included unlimited booze, travel body ABTA has said it “strongly supports” the changes and has welcomed the clarification from the authorities that the restrictions only apply to certain areas in Mallorca and Ibiza, rather than the whole of the Balearics as was previously proposed.
ABTA recommends that anyone travelling to the islands on an all-inclusive package, who booked their trip after January 23 2020, check the details with their travel agent to see if the restrictions apply.
