ARCHIVED - Spain approves fourth Covid jab for over 80s
Only 52% of the population in Spain has had the first booster
The Public Health Commission in Spain announced on Thursday June 9 that a second Covid booster shot will be administered to everyone over the age of 80 living in residential care. Although a set date for the roll-out of the vaccination campaign hasn’t been given, the health authorities will begin “at the most appropriate time according to the epidemiological situation.”
Catalonia has already confirmed that it intends to offer the fourth jab in the autumn, along with the flu vaccine, as was previously suggested for the first booster throughout Spain.
The news comes in a week when Spain’s 14-day cumulative incidence rate has begun to very slightly creep up once more, particularly in this older population, but although there have been several outbreaks in nursing homes, the severity of the illness or mortality rate aren’t any higher than the national average.
Nevertheless, in recent weeks both the US and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDE) have reiterated their feelings that a fourth jab should be offered to everyone over the age of 50 who displays some kind of medical vulnerability.
At the same time, the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) is calling on the Ministry of Health to continue pushing the first booster dose, which to date only 52% of people have had.
The main reason, according to the experts, is that much of the population contracted Omicron during the sixth wave, and so are not yet eligible for a booster. But SEE has argued that most of these people would only have had a very mild infection and as a result, have not generated enough antibodies; for this reason, a third jab should be rolled out to everyone.
For the time being, however, the Ministry views it as “more appropriate” to continue regularly monitoring and assessing the evolution of the pandemic.
