ARCHIVED - Spain prepares to say farewell to petrol and diesel vehicles
By 2040, only zero emission electric cars will be sold in Spain
The end of diesel and petrol vehicles is nigh, with world leaders reaffirming their commitment at the COP26 Climate Change Summit in Glasgow to ensure that all models sold from 2040 will be fully electric, producing zero emissions. Led by the UK, the alliance brings together thirty countries and six major car manufacturers who have also vowed to cease the production of hybrid and liquefied cars in an attempt to drastically reduce greenhouse gases.
Vehicle manufacturers who have committed to stop selling and producing these models by 2040 are: Ford, General Motors, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover and BYD.
Why has Spain not signed the agreement?
Spain joins Germany and France as one of the three EU countries that have not officially committed, alongside the United States, China and Japan.
Nevertheless, Spanish representatives claim to already have “the job done” since the Climate Change Law was ratified earlier this year, guaranteeing that the production of traditional combustion vehicles would be prohibited in this country by 2040.
When will production of these cars stop?
The non-binding agreement has been reached between nations to stop selling all vehicles that emit CO2 from the year 2040; however, in the main automotive markets, the date is more likely to be a couple of years either side of 2035.
Driving petrol or diesel cars bought after 2030
The most important point for drivers is that their petrol or diesel cars will not simply become obsolete once the date arrives. The deadline only applies to manufacturers and dealers, so that motorists can continue to drive their cars until they are ready to be scrapped.
Considering that the useful life of a vehicle is, on average, 10 years, these production restrictions will allow meeting the objectives set by the European Union, which demand that by 2050 all vehicles circulating in the EU be zero emissions.
