ARCHIVED - Spain sizzles in hottest summer for over a century
Spain is suffering through the fourth driest summer season since 1961
While Spain might be enjoying a period of relatively cool weather this week after the unrelenting heat since the end of June, Aemet has nevertheless concluded that “there is no precedent” for a hotter summer than this year for a little over a century.
With more than a week left to go in August, meteorologists predict that this will prove to be the warmest summer since at least 1916.
“That does not mean that the summer of 1915 was warmer than the current one, but with the studies carried out, what we can affirm is that there is no precedent for a summer as warm as the current one in the last 106 years at least,” Aemet explained.
“We are facing an extremely hot summer so far”; June was the fourth warmest on record, July was the warmest month ever in Spain, and the first half of August 2022 was the second hottest since records began, surpassed only by the fierce heatwave of 2003.
While sun worshippers may be basking in the sunshine, this weather spells disaster for Spain’s reservoirs, and the country is experiencing its fourth driest year since 1961, with 26% less rain than normal so far.
The drought has forced several communities to impose water restrictions and incredibly, a megalithic structure known as the Dolmen of Guadalperal has been uncovered at the bottom of a reservoir in Extremadura for only the fourth time ever.
Looking at the calendar year of 2022 up until July 31, Spain has already recorded the third driest period (behind 2005 and 2012) and the third warmest (behind 2020 and 2017), a clear sign of the worsening effects of increased human industrial action on the climate.
