Experts in Spain claim there is no scientific evidence that a fourth vaccine is required at the moment
A resurgence of coronavirus cases across the globe has put the debate about the need for a fourth booster jab back on the table, with France opting to give the extra vaccine to everyone over 65 and Germany announcing that all those over the age of 70, as well as immunosupressed patients and health workers will be offered a fourth dose. Indeed, the leading pharmacology companies, Pfizer and Moderna, recommend a fourth jab for all those over 65.
However, this appears to fly in the face of Spanish experts as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO), who have found no evidence to suggest that yet another jab is in any way beneficial. For now, Spain’s Ministry of Health is only offering a fourth vaccine to people who have received transplants, are undergoing cancer treatment or are over 40 years of age with Down syndrome.
However, it hasn’t been ruled out that extra immunisation might be required come autumn.
The president of the Spanish Society of Immunology (SEI), Marcos López Hoyos, has warned of “immunological fatigue” that could result from vaccinating too many people in too short a space of time. In addition, he has pointed to the possibility of new strains of coronavirus, which may require slightly different vaccines.
"At the moment, we continue to vaccinate with the Wuhan compound and now we are seeing that it may be insufficient and that we need new vaccine models. We should wait for vaccines that are prepared for the new variants or that do not specifically target the S protein, like the current ones. Pfizer and Moderna are already working on these models”, he explained.
The Spanish Hipra vaccine is also ready, and many experts believe that, if a fourth jab is required for older people later in the year, this is the one that will be used, since it generates a stronger immune response than many of the other vaccines under development.
