ARCHIVED - Steel particles found in Moderna Covid vaccines manufactured in Spain
Authorities have insisted that the metal fragments pose no undue risk to patient safety
American pharmaceutical company Moderna has confirmed that a batch of their Covid vaccines produced in Spain contained “steel particles”, which resulted in the Japanese government suspending the administration of 1.63 million doses of the jab after foreign substances were detected in some vials last week. Moderna has since insisted that the foreign material in the vaccines does not pose any health risk.
The particles are believed to have entered the doses at some point in the production chain, according to a joint statement released by Moderna and Takeda, the company responsible for distributing the vaccine in Japan. The most probable cause of the steel fragments being present is friction between metals due to a technical issue with one of the machines, according to Moderna.
Following independent laboratory analysis of the affected batches, produced by Spanish pharmaceutical company Rovi, it has been determined that the presence of ‘Type 316 stainless steel’ does not pose an undue risk to patient safety, and at most may cause a small local reaction.
On the other hand, the Japanese authorities are currently investigating the death of two people who were vaccinated with one of the affected batches before they were withdrawn, to try to clarify whether there is any connection between the deaths and the inoculation.
Takeda and Moderna have insisted that for now "there is no evidence" that the deaths may have been caused by the vaccines.
