ARCHIVED - Ten Spanish regions on alert for sub-zero temperatures
Rain, wind and snow predicted for the weekend across Spain
After an unseasonably warm end to 2021 in Spain the cold has returned with a vengeance and ten communities are on alert on Friday January 7 thanks to maritime storms, wind and sub-zero temperatures. Four regions – Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia and Navarra have been issued with an orange alert due to treacherous sea conditions.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast choppy waves and extreme gusts across the Galician and Cantabrian coasts throughout Friday, while Aragon is expected to see the mercury plummet to -4 degrees and experience snowfall of up to 5 centimetres. In the Balearic Islands, there is a yellow warning in place for temperatures as low as -1 in Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca.
Catalonia is forecast to experience -6 degree temperatures with 10-centimetre thick snowfall in the mountain areas on the Aran Valley, while a yellow alert has been activated in the Valencian Community for gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour until mid-afternoon.
In the rest of the country, cloudy intervals are predicted throughout the day with scattered showers a possibility. Maximum temperatures should increase slightly on the eastern coast while the most notable decreases will be experienced in Andalucía, the Region of Murcia and inland Galicia.
Looking ahead to Saturday, the weekend will be marked by rainfall in the north of Spain, with a high probability of precipitation in the evening in Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Catalonia.
This trend will continue into Sunday with cloudy skies and showers forecast throughout much of Spain. Temperatures will be higher than Saturday on the islands but will drop significantly in Andalucía, while the frosts will return to mountainous regions and the southern part of the country.
Aemet has warned that an orange alert represents a significant meteorological risk, with a certain degree of danger associated with carrying out everyday tasks.
