ARCHIVED - Transport companies in Spain threaten indefinite stoppages
Carriers have demanded a new proposal from the government to avoid strike action in the run-up to Christmas in Spain
Negotiations between transport companies and the Spanish government have reached a stalemate after the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC) categorically rejected the latest proposal put forward by ministers, going as far as threatening that the proposed pre-Christmas strike could continue indefinitely.
Last month, there appeared to be some progress in the discussions, but following a meeting on Thursday December 2, the carriers heavily criticised the proposal, claiming that “not only does it not respond to what is requested by the sector”, but it is actually “more restrictive” than previous commitments.
The transport war has been waging for almost two years, with carriers demanding “safe” rest areas for freight professionals as well as delaying the introduction of the Eurovignette – a taxation system applied to heavy vehicles travelling throughout much of Europe.
The sector is facing many challenges, not least of which is the soaring price of petrol and diesel, a cost that is difficult to pass onto customers and so seriously impacts profit margins.
Given this delicate situation, the CNTC has demanded that other problems be addressed, such as the long waits faced by drivers which result in increased man hours and less income, and the lack of resources to update fleets.
If the most conflictive points are not addressed in the coming weeks, there is a threat that the supply chain will break down before Christmas, with the Committee planning to strike between midnight on December 19 until midnight on December 22.
