ARCHIVED - Valencia Community to add more than 5,000 healthcare professionals next month
Alicante will receive 34.7% of the quota of new healthcare staff
The Minister of Health, Ana Barcelo, has announced that 5,040 professionals will be recruited as of May 1 to alleviate the pressure on the Valencian Community’s over-burdened healthcare system. And this is only the first phase, as in September a further 1,000 staff will be hired with overall priority given to primary care, mental health, emergency services, urgent care and public health.
Ms Barcelo confirmed that this 12% boost to the workforce represents “the largest increase ever in the history of the Valencian health system since its creation,” adding that it is an “unprecedented commitment to Valencian public health and its professionals.”
The current Covid reinforcement contracts already in place will be converted into structured positions, while new personnel from different areas such as psychology, computer science and social work will also be incorporated.
While other autonomous communities reduce their workforces to cut costs, the Minister believes this commitment will transform the Valencian Community into a “point of attraction” for healthcare workers across Spain.
By province, 606 positions will be created in Castellon (12%); 1,751 in Alicante (34.7%) and 2,683 in Valencia (53.3%). It must be taken into account that part of the places assigned to Valencia will not be allocated to the departments but to the central services of Public Health and the Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health.
To speed up the process of hiring, the health department will begin calling professionals already registered and looking for work from April 20.
The first stage of the recruitment process in May will focus on hiring doctors and nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, clinical psychologists, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, administrative assistants and engineers.
