ARCHIVED - Arrests in Murcia and Malaga for falsifying residency documents
Six people have been arrested for facilitating illegal migration to Spain from Nigeria
The National Police have arrested six members of a criminal organisation in Murcia city and Malaga who allegedly sold false residence permits to irregular African immigrants that allowed them to live and work in Spain.
As well as paying the gangsters an upfront fee of between 500 and 600 euros, the immigrants were then required to hand over 200 euros per month while using the documentation, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
Leading up to the arrests, two properties in Malaga and Murcia were raided and more than 50 fake papers from various countries were seized, along with 400 euros in cash, nine mobile phones, and laptop and several computer storage devices.
“The criminal organisation, which was based in the cities of Murcia and Malaga, falsified residence cards outside of Spain, on the African continent. The members of the network sold this documentation to citizens of Nigerian nationality who were residing illegally in national territory. To do this, they had to pay an amount of money for the card and then another monthly sum to pay for its use,” the Ministry statement reads.
At the beginning of February, Spanish officials arrested 19 people in Tarragona and Almeria accused of promoting and facilitating the illegal movement of migrants from North Africa. The criminals allegedly charged each person 5,000 euros to move them by boat to Spain, a perilous journey that costs thousands of migrant lives each year.
And just last week, three people – a Romanian, a Spaniard and a Moroccan – were detained for falsifying “all kinds of identity documents” designed to help illegal migrants travel to Spain.
