Torre Pacheco launches €10.3 million plan to transform town centre
The town’s proposal was selected from 379 applications submitted across Spain
Torre Pacheco is embarking on one of the most ambitious regeneration projects in its recent history, with the town hall launching the first phase of a €10.3 million plan aimed at transforming both the physical landscape and the daily lives of its residents.
The initiative forms part of the EDIL plan, or Local Integrated Development Strategies, under the banner "Connected from a Different Perspective." It's backed by €6.2 million from the European Regional Development Fund, with the town's proposal having been chosen from 379 applications submitted across Spain.
Combined with previous NextGenerationEU funding, Torre Pacheco has now drawn down more than €30 million in European funds.
The plan centres on three main projects getting underway first.
The 4Rs Velodrome is in line for a comprehensive overhaul, with the aim of breathing new life into the historic sports facility under ecological and sustainable principles, giving local and regional sport a significant boost in the process.
A new promenade and urban forest will connect Avenida de Fontes with the IFEPA Exhibition Centre, creating a wide, tree-lined boulevard designed for walking and socialising. According to the town hall, the route has been planned with shade, climate resilience and accessibility in mind, with the goal of reducing urban heat and bringing green space back into the heart of the town centre.
The third project is the renovation of Torre Pacheco's civic centre, which will be transformed into a community hub for the 4Rs neighbourhood. The refurbished space will be designed around inclusivity and everyday community life, with improved facilities for workshops, courses and cultural activities including theatre and dance.
The town hall described the three projects as "the spearhead of a comprehensive strategy," forming the first step in a broader package of seven initiatives across two main projects.
The full programme focuses on work-life balance, sport and tackling high temperatures through green spaces and cooler urban environments.
