ARCHIVED - Baby killed by blow from hailstones in Spain
The 20-month-old girl suffered a blow of ice to the head during torrential storms in Catalonia
A violent hail storm that battered the province of Girona in Catalonia on Tuesday August 30 has resulted in the death of a 20-month-old baby, who was hit in the head by a hailstone measuring more than 10 centimetres in diameter.
The storm, which also caused several injuries and serious damage in the area of La Bisbal d'Empordà, is the strongest of its kind recorded in Catalonia in 20 years, according to the Generalitat.
The town was suddenly swamped in the deadly deluge at around 7.30pm and the baby girl suffered the blow in the few minutes that the hail storm raged. She was rushed to the Trueta de Girona Hospital where she sadly passed away as a result of severe head trauma on Wednesday morning (August 31).

During the ordeal, firefighters registered more than 40 emergency calls “due to different damage to buildings and wiring”, as well as to support “in the assistance of the injured”. The streets have been littered with shattered glass and dented vehicles, while La Bisbal primary care centre treated 28 people for bruises and cuts.
Spain is leaving August with an unusual mixture of extreme weather phenomena; several areas of Catalonia remain under alert for “violent weather” with the “possibility of hail stones of more than 2 centimetres, winds of more than 25 metres per second and tornados.”
On Wednesday, an orange alert (major risk) has been activated in the province of Barcelona due to rains of up to 50 litres.
On the other hand, savagely hot temperatures continue to plague much of southern Spain as the country gears up for an autumn around 1.5ºC warmer than usual.
