ARCHIVED - Lucky escape as train smashes into vehicle in Pozo Estrecho
The car stalled while crossing the railway line
A female driver had a lucky escape on Wednesday evening when her car was hit by a train on the railway line between Pozo Estrecho and La Palma.
The incident occurred just after 20:30 on Wednesday evening when the white Ford transit stalled in the middle of a railway crossing in Pozo Estrecho, and in spite of several attempts to re-start it, the vehicle remained directly in the path of an oncoming train.
Realising that a collision was unavoidable, the driver leapt out of the car and ran for safety as the Murcia bound train ploughed into her vehicle, crushing it completely and pushing it down the line for over 300 metres as the driver brought his train to a stop.
Cartagena firemen attended the scene and removed the crushed remains of the vehicle from the scene and cleared the track in order to re-establish services of the line.
The train remained stuck between Pozo Estrecho and La Palma for several hours, so passengers were transferred to a bus to complete their journey while the vehicle was removed and the line and train checked for damage.
Fortunately there were no injuries, other than shock!
