Barcelona to close one of its ports to cruise ships
The Barcelona Norte dock will cease all cruise activity this October

Barcelona is doing its bit in the fight against climate change by closing off its north port to all cruise ship activity from this October, thus honouring a 2018 agreement made between the Port and Council to shut down “the emission point closest to the city.”
Earlier this summer, a study commissioned by campaign group Transport & Environment found that luxury liners resulted in more environmental pollution during 2022 than all of Europe’s cars combined.
Unsurprisingly, the most popular tourist destinations registered the worst pollution, with Italy, Germany, Spain and Norway all in the bad books. In fact, Barcelona was ranked as the most polluted city on the continent while Southampton in the UK also made the infamous top ten list.
On October 2, the last cruise ship will set sail from the Barcelona Norte pier and on the 22nd “all operations will cease,” with all cruise liners moving to the nearby Adossat dock from that date, according to a Port of Barcelona source.
However, boating activity won’t completely cease at the Barcelona dock and the pier “will be opened to the public” right before the Copa América celebrations begin in August 2024 and again at the end of the competition.
