Magaluf company fined 161K for packing illegal party boat with tourists
So-called booze cruises have been outlawed in many parts of Spain to reduce drunken tourism
Authorities in Calvià, situated in the western part of the resort town of Magaluf, have fined a local company 161,000 euros for selling tickets on illegal “party boats.” The captain of one such ship was caught “red-handed” by the Local Police when no fewer than 130 tipsy guests were spotted boarding in the Mallorca port.
Many holiday hotspots like Magaluf and Ibiza have outlawed these booze cruises in a bid to stamp out the reputation of the Balearic Islands as a wild party destination. Several of these popular resorts have also banned organised pub crawls and happy hour offers, while all-inclusive hotels now limit tourists to just six alcoholic beverages per day to prevent excessive drinking.
Calvià councillor Juan Feliu explained that running party boats is now considered “a very serious offence, and given that the Local Police surprised the company when it was boarding customers, the evidence is irrefutable.”
Investigating officers discovered that each of the 130 guests were charged 45 euros for a booze-filled day on the water. Some of the customers “already showed obvious symptoms of drunkenness before boarding,” a spokesperson pointed out, adding that copious amounts of alcohol was also for sale on the boat.
In addition, unlabelled bottles of booze, full plastic jugs and an amplified stereo system were found in a storage area below deck.
Feliu has reiterated that the illegal practice of party boats “must be stopped, whether in Calvià or anywhere else”.
“Businesspeople in the tourism sector and their employees work very hard every day to maintain and improve the external image of Calvià and the municipality will not be allowed to identify itself with excess tourism,” he stressed.
