ARCHIVED - Benidorm Council bows to public pressure for improved lighting in large residential area
350 new 'smart' lights will be installed in the Marina Baixa town's Colonia Madrid

Benidorm Town Hall will install 350 new 'smart' lights that can be controlled individually in Colonia Madrid following calls from neighbours to light up a number of 'dark spots' in the resort's largest residential area.
As part of the local authority's 'On the Street' campaign, the Mayor Toni Perez was joined by members of the local residents' association and the Neighbourhood Council on a night-time tour of Colonia Madrid to witness first hand the issue with lighting.
It was explained that, within the IDAE (Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving), the lights will be installed at El Cruce, at the junction of Jaime I, Alfonso Puchades and up to Calle Estació, and will be managed "individually and intelligently".
Two years ago, the lighting in the neighbourhood was replaced with LED alternatives, "because they are more efficient, do not contain mercury like the old ones, are more durable and almost triple the life of the lights", explained Perez.

But the mayor added that the new system which will implemented "also includes the capacity for remote management".
"Each one of them can be switched on, switched off or regulated independently and monitored to continue to optimise the basic and essential service of public lighting," he said.
And those that are removed will be recycled and moved to other areas in Benidorm, such as rural roads.
Having highlighted the 'darkest spots' most in need of new lighting in the neighbourhood, residents took the opportunity to ask for clarification over the 'orange' parking zones, following the appearance of new signage in recent weeks.
Perez assured that "residents in Benidorm's orange zone will not pay to park".
