ARCHIVED - Benidorm promenade is given a touch of culture with open-air art exhibition
Paseo Poniente in the Marina Baixa resort, Alicante province, is now home to seven huge sculptures
Visitors to Benidorm's Poniente beach are in for a treat with the creation of an open-air art exhibition of sculptures by Spanish artist Juan Méjica which will be on display until October 9.
Each crafted piece strategiclly placed in Paseo Poniente depicts different "universal Spanish themes" and were unveiled on Wednesday July 6 by the artist himself, Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez, Councillor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer; and the Director of the Méjica Foundation, Dolores Rodríguez.
"This is an exhibition of the highest level made up of seven large sculptures by a sculptor of recognised national and international prestige who has works spread over five continents," said the mayor, adding that "hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists will be able to admire the art over the next three months".
"The Juan Méjica Foundation has put in a lot of effort, along with the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage, to stage the resort's third open-air exhibition in such a short time, bringing culture to the streets."
Artist Méjica explained that the seven pieces on display reflect an "iconography of universal Spanish themes" such as "the bull, anthropomorphic beings, the solar woman, the Asturcón and the yew tree".
Each piece is made of an alloy of steel and copper, weigh between two and five tons and are almost four metres high.
"Placing the sculptures next to the sea brings out their full potential. They are designed to be touched, to be experienced and I hope the thousands of people who visit Benidorm will take away these image when they leave."
The exhibition runs from Paseo de Poniente - at the height of Avenida Jaime I - to the junction with Avenida de Xixo.
