ARCHIVED - Boozed up Brit reduces Ryanair flight attendant to tears on flight from Spain
The abusive passenger got drunk before travelling from Barcelona to the UK to control his fear of flying
A British tourist has been slapped with a substantial fine after his drunken behaviour left one Ryanair cabin crew member in floods of tears on a flight from Spain to the UK.
The belligerent antics took place on the day of the Queen’s funeral on September 19 aboard a flight from Barcelona. According to court reports, 47-year-old Hampshire man Mark Warne got drunk in the airport and was so intoxicated that staff refused to serve him any more alcohol on the plane.
As a result, the entire journey was dominated by his abusive rants, during which he told the flight attendants to “f**k off”, to go “f**k themselves” and that they were “f**king nothing”. At one point, he even squared up to a cabin crew member while shouting in her face.
So disruptive was Mr Warne’s behaviour that the pilot alerted air traffic control to the problem before the flight touched down. Police officers were waiting when it hit the tarmac at Bournemouth Airport and escorted the passenger off the plane in handcuffs.
Mr Warne’s defence lawyer Philomena Murphy told the UK court that her client is terribly afraid of flying and had a few drinks in the Spanish airport to steady his nerves after a weekend get-away with friends. He “could not understand how he got into such a state,” she said.
The judge advised him to find a better way to control his phobia after he plead guilty to one count of behaving in a threatening, abusive, insulting or disorderly manner. He was issued with an 800-euro fine for his “appalling” behaviour.
“These people are looking after you on a plane and they have to deal with that. You have got to think about another way of dealing with your fear of flying,” Fiona McKenna, the presiding magistrate, concluded.
