Bottled gas in Spain drops to lowest price of the year
An average butane gas cylinder in shops throughout Spain has fallen to 14.43 euros
Now that the winter is setting in, people living in Spain will be turning their minds away from heatwaves and endless sunshine and towards ways to keep the house cosy in the coming months. If you’re one of the many residents who opt for gas heating then you’re in luck, as the price of butane canisters has plummeted again.
The cost of gas cylinders has fallen by 4.94% in the latest price review on Tuesday September 19 and from this date, customers will be able to refill their 12.5kg bottles for just 14.43 euros.
This is the third consecutive drop in price this year and the new figure is 15.7% cheaper than September 2022.
Last year, the Spanish government took drastic measures as the fuel crisis set in, freezing the maximum cost of a butane canister at 19.55 euros until the end of June 2023. Since then, the value of gas is reviewed bimonthly on a Tuesday and the cost is then set depending on the price butane and propane are fetching on the international market.
The next butane bottle price review will take place at the end of November.
The latest price drop is mainly due to the drop in the cost of raw materials, which has decreased by 9.8% in the last two months. The evolution of the euro-dollar exchange rate and freight (maritime transport) has also had an influence, according to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
In Spain, butane is the most commonly used fuel among households not hooked up to the natural gas network. The latest report from the Ministry, which corresponds to 2020, suggests that 16.6% of homes use butane as the main source of energy for cooking and 4.3% for heating.
