Boy, 6, dies and mother is seriously injured in gas blast at their Granada home
40 neighbours in the block of flats in the Andalucian province were evacuated after flames tore through the apartment

A six-year-old boy has died in a horrific fire following a gas explosion at a block of flats in Granada. The child's 47-year-old mother sustained serious injuries and was admitted to hospital with burns all over her body.
The blast happened at around 3.15am on Monday morning, May 14, and several neighbours alerted the emergency services. More than 40 residents were evacuated, but the only people seriously hurt were the child and his mum, believed to be Moroccan.
According to Granada's fire chief, Gustavo Molino, the origin of the explosion was the gas cooker. Apparently, the blast was sparked when the child got up with his mother to go to the bathroom and turned on the light.
The flames quickly spread across the terrace of the third-floor flat in a five-storey block in Calle Circunvalación Encina, in the La Chana neighbourhood. Most of the residents are said to be elderly.
The fire was extinguished just before 4.15am. At around 4.30am, a judicial commission went to the scene to certify the removal of the deceased child.
A fire spokesperson said that, on arrival at flat, they found the child already deceased and his mother with "significant" burns, "so the first action was to get both out of the property".
The mother has been taken to the Traumatology Hospital in Granada and her prognosis is "serious".
An elderly neighbour was also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and an officer has been treated for burns to one hand.
The seriously injured woman's partner was not at home at the time and police were this morning trying to locate him to notify him of the incident. Meanwhile, the owner of the property told the Spanish press the tenant had an eviction order for May 24 for non-payment of rent.
