Brit cyclist critical after being struck by a car in Mallorca
The tourist was hit while cycling along a motorway, which is prohibited in Spain
A 56-year-old British holidaymaker is fighting for his life after being struck by a car in Mallorca while he was out cycling at the weekend. The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, June 29, has left the tourist in critical condition with severe injuries.
The British man was cycling along the MA-1 motorway near the turn-off for Cala Major, a popular cove overlooking the beautiful Palma Bay, at around 7pm when he was hit from behind by a vehicle. The impact launched him into the air, leaving him unconscious on the ground.
Police and emergency responders were quickly on the scene and the Briton was rushed to Son Espares Hospital under a “green light” alert, which cleared the way for the ambulance. He was admitted to intensive care with sustained head, chest and pelvic injuries and is still critical.
Mallorca is a popular destination for both amateur and professional cyclists, but it has been the scene of many road casualties in recent years.
Last summer, a 45-year-old British cyclist was seriously injured near Caimiri in Mallorca, a small town at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains. He fell more than 30 feet down an embankment, suffering severe head, chest and stomach injuries after being struck by a passing truck.
Island authorities are still investigating the current incident, including reports that the cyclist may have been attempting to cross the motorway near a holiday resort in the direction of Andratx. Throughout Spain, cycling on motorways is prohibited.
The identity and nationality of the driver involved have not been disclosed, and police are continuing their inquiries.
Meanwhile, police on the island of Tenerife have called off the search for 19-year-old Jay Slater, a British tourist who went missing following a music gig two weeks ago on June 17.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil confirmed on Sunday evening that while the official hunt for Jay is no longer “active”, “the case is still open and there are several lines of investigation.”
