Search for Jay Slater called off by Spanish police
The 19-year-old disappeared in northern Tenerife on June 17
Just shy of two weeks after 19-year-old British holidaymaker Jay Slater disappeared in the rugged mountains of north Tenerife, the Spanish authorities have called off the widespread search that has been running day and night on Sunday June 30. However, the investigation into the young man’s disappearance remains open.
The Lancashire teen has been missing since June 17 and huge search parties have been scouring the remotest corners of the island, with specialist search and rescue teams, complete with canine units and drones, drafted in from Madrid last week.
On Saturday June 29, the Guardia Civil issued an appeal for volunteers and dozens of people set out to comb the vast Rural de Teno national park and the nearby village of Masca once more, all to no avail.
The search on Saturday included caves, ravines and steep, rocky terrain surrounding the area where Jay’s phone was last geolocated before the battery died.
Jay’s family have vowed to continue the search themselves with the help or relatives, friends and concerned locals. And while a spokesperson for the Guardia Civil confirmed on Sunday evening that the official hunt for Jay is no longer “active”, he said that “the case is still open and there are several lines of investigation.”
The young tourist travelled to Tenerife last month with two friends to attend a music festival in the south of the island. In the early hours of June 16, he met two other British holidaymakers and spent the night in their AirBnb in the Teno Park.
His friends reported him missing the following morning and in the last contact they had with him before his mobile phone battery ran out, he told them that he had missed the bus, was thirsty and was trying to walk back to his apartment, which would have been a 10-kilometre trek.
