The deceased, who lived in the UK and was from Turkey, died at Can Pere Antoni beach in the island capital Palma
A 78-year-old British resident from Turkey has died after drowning in front of his wife whilst swimming at a beach in the island capital Palma.
The deceased, who has not been identified, was spotted floating in the water at Can Pere Antoni, a long sandy beach located around a mile east of the city centre, just before 4pm on Tuesday September 6.
Lifeguards rushed to try to revive the pensioner before paramedics took over, but despite multiple resuscitation efforts, he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
A routine investigation is now underway to determine the exact cause of death.
According to reports, the beach was packed at the time of the tragedy, and police covered the victim's body with sun loungers so that it wasn't visible to beachgoers.
A 65-year-old man died at the same beach two years ago, an hour after saving another bather who had run into difficulties.
On Sunday morning, September 4, a 35-year-old British woman died after plunging from the sixth-floor of the four-star Hotel Palma Bellver just over a five-minute car ride away from Can Pere Antoni beach.
Her death is not being treated as suspicious, although results of a post mortem on Monday have not yet been made public.
