British inmate attempts daring prison break in Ibiza
Spanish police are hunting for two accomplices who tried to spring the prisoner on an escorted trip to the dentist
It reads like a mediocre movie script, but Ibiza was the scene of a real-life prison break attempt involving a British inmate that went badly wrong this week.
The bold plot unfolded at around 11am on Monday October 9 in the heart of Ibiza town while two officers were escorting the prisoner away from a private dental clinic where he had attended a scheduled appointment.
Two masked men attacked the officers in a bid to free the unnamed Brit as the trio made their way back to the prison van. A struggle ensued but the pair ultimately left empty-handed in a getaway vehicle, which was found burned out a short time later.
The UK inmate made a brief attempt to flee but he was quickly apprehended.
Although official sources have refused to comment on the identity of the prisoner, aside from confirming that he is indeed a UK citizen, local reports claim he is closely linked to the drug trafficking trade and was a fugitive from British justice before being tracked to the island and arrested two months ago.
Witnesses to the surreal prison break attempt claim that the masked abductors pistol whipped the officers in their attempts to spring the inmate.
A Guardia Civil spokesperson said: “One of the officers was assaulted with what would appear to be a pistol but until arrests are made and the weapon seized, we won’t be in a position to determine if it was real or fake.”
He added: “I can confirm we are still hunting for two men who tried to help a prisoner escape yesterday in Ibiza Town following a visit to a dentist.
“He was being walked from the dental surgery to a police van when the officers were confronted. The officers managed to resist the attack and the two assailants escaped in a dark-coloured vehicle. The prisoner remains in custody after the attempt to free him failed.”
It’s understood that the authorities plan to move the British prisoner to a more secure facility in mainland Spain following the audacious attempt.
