ARCHIVED - British man, 58, drowns at Tenerife beach
The Briton was pulled from the sea on the Spanish island in front of a terrified child
A 58-year-old British man has died after being pulled from the surf in Tenerife. According to official sources, the UK national was swimming at a beach close to the Teno lighthouse in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte when he lost consciousness.
Sadly, the Briton was visiting the beach with a young child who watched in horror from the shore as two other beachgoers tried to resuscitate the man, to no avail.
A regional government statement confirmed: “We received the alert just before 5pm on Friday, requesting help for a person two swimmers had pulled out of the water who had gone into cardiac arrest.
“One of the rescuers was a nurse and began to perform resuscitation manoeuvres until the emergency responders arrived”.
A rescue helicopter and an ambulance staffed with personnel from the nearby health centre, together with the local police and officers from the Guardia Civil, rushed to the scene and took over the rescue attempt.
“The experts continued with the resuscitation attempts when they arrived but were unable to save the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“A team of psychologists was also activated to assist a child who was accompanying the person that died.”
Punta de Teno is located at the westernmost tip of the island of Tenerife and its spectacular views of the North Atlantic Ocean, as well as the beautiful lighthouse overlooking the volcanic coast, make its coastal coves popular hotspots with tourists all year round.
The existing lighthouse, which entered into service in 1978, is part of the Teno Rural Park, one of the many protected natural areas on the Spanish Islands.
The holiday island was also the scene of major disruption this weekend when a flight from Liverpool was forced to make a rapid landing in Tenerife after a massive brawl broke out in the cabin. Around a dozen troublesome passengers will hauled off the plane by police and sent on the next flight back to the UK.
