ARCHIVED - Mass brawl on easyJet flight forces rapid landing in Tenerife
A dozen “troublesome” passengers were hauled off the Liverpool flight when the plane touched down in Spain
An easyJet pilot was forced to radio air traffic controllers at Tenerife airport last weekend to request priority landing as a mass brawl, reportedly involving around a dozen rowdy passengers, broke out in the cabin during a flight from Liverpool.
Sources claim the crew requested a police presence when the plane landed “to guarantee the safety of all passengers and crew” on Saturday April 22 and officers hauled the troublemakers into custody.
The identity and nationality of the brawlers haven’t been released by the Spanish authorities but it’s understood they were shipped back to the UK on the next available flight.
easyJet is downplaying the incident but Spanish Air Traffic controllers confirmed the disruption on social media: "Flight from Liverpool arriving at Tenerife South with a dozen troublesome passengers on board.
"Priority and police presence being coordinated on arrival at the crew’s request.
"The landing approach will be shortened as much as possible.
"All our support to crews and officials in airports who, more often than is desirable, have to deal with these situations."
They went on to say that the pilot requested a swift landing to prevent the situation from getting further out of hand:
"This was done to prevent further disturbances on board the aircraft and to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew," according to the island's press.
"The speed in the response of the authorities and the teamwork allowed the plane to land without major complications and a more serious situation was avoided."
Airline bosses preferred to describe the incident as a "disturbance", but did concede that a large group of passengers was "behaving disruptively onboard".
"Whilst such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard," an easyJet spokesperson added.
