Liam Hannigan, 34, has not been in contact with his family or friends since February 7, and his sister Ellie believes his phone has been switched off. His disappearance has raised serious concerns, as those close to him say he would never voluntarily cut off contact for such a long period.
Liam had initially travelled to Tenerife with his partner on December 29 but later returned to the island alone to visit friends he had met during his holiday. A missing person appeal was launched after his passport and one of his bank cards were discovered at a family friend’s house in the Los Cristianos resort.
Ellie, who has been leading efforts to locate her brother, described the situation as deeply worrying. “Normally, if he wasn’t speaking to me, he’d be in contact with one of our other sisters or our mum,” she told Manchester Evening News. “Over the weekend, we realised he hadn’t contacted any of us, and his friends said they hadn’t seen him since Friday morning.”
She emphasised that Liam is very family-oriented and would not disappear without letting someone know his plans. “He would never ever stress us out like this, it’s very unusual. My mum and stepdad are flying out today to help with the search.”
Liam was last seen in the La Asomada area, though he also spent time with friends in Los Cristianos. He had been using a travel bank card in the area before his disappearance. CCTV footage confirmed that he was last spotted walking alone on the morning of 10 February, without any belongings or means to pay for food or drink.
Ellie has dismissed speculation circulating on social media, stressing that Liam’s disappearance is not the result of reckless behaviour. “Liam is not out drinking or involved in anything illegal. This isn’t about a ‘bender’ or him wandering off drunk. He is unwell, and what he needs right now is medical attention and support.”
The Foreign Office has confirmed that they are providing assistance to Liam’s family. A spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man in Tenerife.” The case has also been reported to Greater Manchester Police.
Liam is described as being around 6ft 1in, slim, with tanned skin, a full beard, and tattoos, including ‘Family First’ on his chest and a small ‘A’ on his wrist. He may be wearing a black shiny Moncler body warmer with a hood and green Croc shoes.
Last summer, British teenager Jay Slater went missing in Tenerife, and his body was found a month later in one of the island’s many secluded, rocky areas.
Liam Hannigan’s family is urging anyone with information to come forward. Reports can be made to police in Tenerife in English by calling the Spanish National Police helpline on 0034 902 102 112.
