ARCHIVED - British paraglider, 50, dies after crashing in Spanish mountains
The fatal accident occurred very close to where the body of British hiker Esther Dingley was found last year
A 50-year-old British man died in a tragic paragliding accident in the Pico Gallinero mountain peak in Spain on Thursday September 22 when he crashed into the side of a 2,600-metre cliff.
Hikers out on the peak called the Guardia in Civil at around 1.30pm, reporting that the man was conscious but finding it difficult to breathe. A police helicopter and a mountain rescue team were immediately dispatched to the tricky terrain, where they found the two witnesses performing CPR.
However despite their best efforts, the Briton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem was scheduled over the weekend and a local investigation has been launched to try and determine the cause of the fatal accident.
The man’s identity hasn’t been released by the Foreign Office.
A spokesperson said: “We are providing support to the family of a British national who died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Thursday’s tragedy occurred very close to the mountain which claimed the life of British hiker Esther Dingley, an outcrop right on the Spanish border with France.
Esther went missing on Pico Gallinero while climbing alone on November 22 2020 and the search for her remains dragged on for months, hampered by difficult weather conditions over the winter. When the manhunt resumed in the spring of last year, a piece of skull was found that later turned out to be Esther's.
A post-mortem carried out in France confirmed that the 37-year-old lost her footing near the 700-metre summit of Pic de la Glere and died instantly in the fall.
