ARCHIVED - WATCH: Disabled Brit forced to drag herself to toilet on Mallorca flight
The UK blogger and activist claims a flight attendant told her she “should wear nappies” on the flight to Spain
Hartlepool woman Jennie Berry has shared footage of the shocking treatment she received at the hands of cabin crew aboard a flight to Palma de Mallorca. Paralysed from the waist down, Jennie was told that there was no wheelchair available on the Albastar flight from Newcastle airport.
The young woman claims that flight attendants offered her no assistance to get to the bathroom at the front of the plane, and she was reduced to dragging herself along the aisle on her bum.
Jennie said: “Every flight I’ve ever had has been with an aisle chair. It’s how they got me onto the plane but when I got on, they said they didn’t have one on board.
“The flight didn’t get off to a great start as they wouldn’t let me sit anywhere near the front of the plan even though there were spare seats.
“Then when I asked if I could go to the toilet, they just said no that they couldn’t help and they just carried on serving the drinks.
“Once I reached the toilet, staff told me that ‘disabled people should wear nappies on board’. Apparently, that’s their solution.”
Although the Hartlepool native and her partner had originally booked with TUI their flight was cancelled and switched to small Spanish carrier Albastar.
Jennie is a well-known blogger and disability activist in the UK and her story has caused outrage among her online community, with the video picking up more than 15,000 ‘likes’.
Former Eastenders actress and Strictly Come Dancing’s first deaf participant Rose Ayling-Ellis was one of the many followers who rushed to show their support.
“This is so unacceptable. I’m sorry this happened to you. It’s so frustrating to see that attitude is still happening. I hope you’re ok,” Rose wrote.
