ARCHIVED - British tourist dies in fall from Magaluf balcony
The holidaymaker is believed to have consumed a large amount of alcohol prior to the tragic accident in Spain
A 31-year-old British man has died after falling from the seventh-floor balcony of a hotel in Magaluf in Mallorca. Officers confirmed that the tourist died on the spot and the preliminary investigation indicates that he had consumed a large amount of alcohol before the fatal accident.
This is the first fatality of a holidaymaker falling from an apartment building due to alcohol or drugs this year.
According to the Guardia Civil, the Briton and a group of friends returned to their rooms at the South Beach Hotel in the Calvià area of Magaluf shortly after 8.30am on Thursday May 12 after being out partying the night before. Witnesses observed the tourist behaving strangely on his balcony right before he fell, and even filmed the event. The young man sadly died instantly from the force of the impact.
Members of the Calvià Local Police and the Guardia Civil rushed to the scene, along with emergency medical personnel, but they were only able to confirm his death.
The body has been transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute for a post-mortem and the armed institute has opened an investigation.
Earlier this month, an Irish tourist was seriously injured when he fell from a balcony in the tourist resort of Santa Ponsa.
The practice of balconing, whereby tourists, often under the influence, climb over apartment block terraces or even jump off them into the pool, has increased in recent years on the Spanish islands and this summer the Balearic Islands government is determined to crack down on drunken tourism.
Holidaymakers who engage in balconing in Magaluf or Sant Antoni in Ibiza will face fines of up to 60,000 euros and face eviction from their hotel.
