ARCHIVED - British tourist falls to his death from historic cannon in Barcelona
The young man climbed the monument after a night out with friends in Spain
A 23-year-old British holidaymaker has plunged to his death after falling from a cannon in the popular Barcelona coastal town of Sitges. The tourist was reportedly on a night out with friends when he climbed onto the gun at around 3am on Tuesday morning, June 7, before losing his balance and toppling onto the rocks below.
The cannon perches on a rocky lookout called the Baluard next to San Bartolome y Santa Tecla church in Sitges, around 24 km from the Catalan capital.
Emergency services and a medical helicopter were immediately dispatched to the scene but sadly could not save the young tourist.
A spokesperson for the Mossos d’Esquadra, Barcelona’s police force said: “He appears to have fallen from a replica cannon in front of a church by the sea overlooking rocks which are there to protect the sea wall and landed on the rocks as he fell.
“He was pulled out of the water by a passer-by and one of the people he was with. He was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Official sources say there is no indication of foul play and a post-mortem will be carried out on the body of the young man.
An FCDO spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British National who died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
