ARCHIVED - Tourist is seriously injured in another Mallorca balcony fall
The 19-year-old fell from the fourth floor at a hotel in Palma
A 19-year-old man has been seriously injured after falling from a fourth floor balcony at a hotel in Palma, Mallorca, where holidaymakers who engage in 'balconing' face fines of up to 60,000 euros and eviction from the hotel.
It's not clear if the young tourist was actually climbing over the balcony deliberately to jump off or access another one, but the incident follows the death of a British holidaymaker who died after falling from a seventh-floor balcony in the Spanish party resort of Magaluf earlier this month – the first fatality of a holidaymaker falling from an apartment building due to alcohol or drugs this year.
The latest fall happened around 3am this morning, Friday May 27, at the BQ Belvedere Hotel in the San Agustín neighbourhood of Palma, according to the Urgent Medical Care Service (SAMU 061).
Patrols from the Palma Local Police and the National Police were sent to the hotel, together with an Advanced Life Support ambulance. Upon arrival, they found the 19-year-old conscious but suffering from multiple contusions and a number of fractures to his right leg.
Due to the seriousness of his injuries, the young man was transferred to the Son Espases University Hospital where he remains in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit. The cause of the fall is being investigated.
Earlier this week, a 19-year-old Norwegian holidaymaker broke his neck after falling into the shallow end of a pool in Magaluf. The tourist, who was drunk at the time, had been partying with friends at Oceans Beach Club when he fell. He too is in ICU at Son Espases University Hospital in a very serious condition with suspected spinal cord injuries.
