British tourist in critical condition after being knocked unconscious in Tenerife
The UK holidaymaker fractured his skull when he was punched to the ground at one of Spain’s top party destinations
A British tourist in his 30s is in a critical condition in a Tenerife hospital after being knocked unconscious in the early hours of Sunday morning, April 30. According to local reports, the holidaymaker got into a fight with three other Britons after a long night of drinking on the Veronicas Strip.
The assault occurred in the popular holiday resort of Playa de las Americas and the young tourist was supposedly knocked off his feet with a single punch. He smashed his head on the ground and was rendered unconscious with a fractured skull.
Paramedics did their best to stabilise him at the scene before transferring the victim to Our Lady of Candelaria University Hospital in Santa Cruz, where he is still believed to be in intensive care.
Island police arrested the other three British men but are yet to make a statement about the incident.
The Veronicas Strip is an area packed full of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and fast food joints very popular with holidaymakers from the UK and unfortunately, altercations aren’t uncommon, with venues serving alcohol late into the night.
Often described as the “ultimate destination for partygoers,” one online travel site warns tourists to remain on the guard against trouble: “If you do decide to check out Playa de las Americas at night, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and not get too drunk, as you would in any city centre on a Friday or Saturday night.
“Stick together with a group and don’t engage with unsolicited offers from street vendors.”
