British tourists seriously injured in Mallorca boat explosion
The couple was rushed to hospital in Palma de Mallorca with second-degree burns
A British couple is recovering from second-degree burns after a terrifying boat explosion in Mallorca on Sunday June 16. The incident, which occurred in the Port of Palma, sent shockwaves through the tourist community and sparked a rapid emergency response.
The couple, a 44-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, were reportedly working on the engine of a Zodiac-type semi-rigid boat when the unexpected blast occurred. The force of the explosion threw them into the water and the rental boat quickly caught fire, along with another vessel nearby.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with police, firefighters and paramedics receiving multiple 999 calls just after midday. The injured couple was treated for burns to their faces and arms, as well as less severe burns on other parts of their bodies. They were then transported to a private clinic in Palma de Mallorca for further care.
This frightening accident comes just days after another boat explosion in Cabo Roig, on the Orihuela Costa, injured three people, including a British holidaymaker.
The 37-year-old British citizen and a 31-year-old Lithuanian woman suffered facial burns and were treated at Torrevieja Hospital. A 34-year-old Spanish man, who was reportedly cleaning the vessel, sustained severe burns to the bottom half of his body and was airlifted to a hospital in Valencia.
While the cause of the Mallorca explosion is still under investigation, early theories suggest a potential fuel spill or engine failure. The quick response of the emergency services prevented further damage, but the two vessels involved in the blast sadly sank.
