British woman dies after cosmetic surgery operation in Spain
The tourist suffered “a series of complications” and died in a Mallorca hospital
So-called ‘cosmetic tourism’ is big business, with people flying all over the world to bag a bargain procedure at a fraction of the price it would cost in the UK. Very often though, the results are disappointing, and can sometimes prove deadly.
Earlier this month an unnamed British holidaymaker died after jetting to a private clinic in Mallorca for cosmetic surgery. According to sources close to the case, the patient suffered “a series of complications” after the procedure and had to be rushed to Son Espases Hospital in Palma, where she died hours later.
The surgeon who operated on the Briton is understood to have many years of experience working in clinics throughout Spain and Europe, but he is now under investigation by the authorities for possible medical negligence.
Around the time of this tragedy, UK coroner Jacqueline Lake warned people of the dangers of opting for cheap cosmetic surgery abroad following the inquest of a 31-year-old who died in 2019 after flying to Turkey for a bum lift.
During the procedure, injected fat entered a vein of Norfolk woman Melissa Kerr and she passed away on the day of the surgery.
“I'm concerned patients are not being made aware of the risks or the mortality rate associated with such surgery,” Ms Lake said.
“I do have concerns there will be future deaths and I’m of the view future deaths can be prevented by way of better information,” she added.
British medical professionals have raised their concerns with the health secretary about the risks associated with travelling overseas for low-budget surgery, and an international alert has since been issued to surgeons regarding the high mortality rate associated with the Brazilian butt lift procedure.
