ARCHIVED - British variant of Covid accounts for eight out of ten cases throughout Valencia region
The highly infectious ‘British’ or Kent variant of coronavirus has become the most prevalent in the Valencia region and is now responsible for 78.4 per cent of all cases, the health authorities have reported.
The incidence rate, however, currently remains below 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants: 33.69 over the last 14 days and 14.29 over the last week.
The Spanish Health Minister has praised the region’s efforts, which have now made it the region with the lowest incidence rates in the country, even though last week the region had reached the low level of 26 cases per 100,000.
With rates rising across Spain during the last few days, the Valencia region (the provinces of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia) remains the lowest in the country even with a slightly higher rate of 33.
This week the vaccination campaign is expected to move forward at a much faster rate; to date the regional authorities have administered 873,629 doses of the vaccine and on Monday took delivery of a further 125,190 vials of the Pfizer vaccine which will be administered to those aged 80 on Monday and Tuesday, then from Wednesday onwards to 79-78 year olds, working down through the age brackets by date of birth.
The AstraZeneca vaccine will be administered to those aged 65 and 64.
The health authorities have repeated their request that residents only attend a clinic for vaccination if they have received a message advising them to do so; do NOT turn up at the local health centre they say, without an appointment.
