Investigators are examining whether distraction played a role in the collision between a family van and a lorry in the Region of Murcia

A 42-year-old British woman has died after the van in which she was travelling with her family collided with a lorry on the A-7 motorway in Totana, Murcia.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 1.45pm on Saturday February 21 at kilometre point 611.700 of the Murcia motorway, in the direction of the province’s capital, according to sources from the Guardia Civil Traffic division.
The vehicle, which was carrying the British family of four, collided with the trailer of an articulated lorry. Emergency services described the aftermath as severe.
According to the 112 emergency services website, it was “an extremely serious scene with one person who had been thrown from a vehicle after a collision and was lying on the road”.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the 42-year-old woman died at the scene.
The remaining family members were also injured. An 18-year-old boy sustained very serious injuries and was transferred by ambulance to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia. A 40-year-old man and a 7-year-old girl suffered less serious injuries, according to information published by the emergency services.
The two drivers travelling in the cab of the articulated lorry sustained minor injuries, the Civil Guard confirmed.
Traffic officers from the Guardia Civil, firefighters from the regional consortium based at the Lorca station and paramedics in several ambulances were deployed to the scene. Fire crews were placed on standby in case it was necessary to free anyone trapped inside the damaged vehicles.
An investigation into the exact cause of the collision is ongoing. While a full report has yet to be completed, investigators are examining whether driver distraction may have contributed to the tragic incident.
