ARCHIVED - Brocomole: Spanish invention broccoli guacamole up for food innovation award in Berlin
The vegetable dip developed in Spain will compete at the two-day exhibition to be voted the top product of the year
Spain might be better known for its tried and tested traditional dishes, but a new vegetable spread designed for dipping is making international waves. Brocomole, made with 97% fresh broccoli and avocado, is the only Spanish product to be chosen as one of the top ten innovations in the Fruit Logistica Innovation Awards (FLIA).
Having received the honour, the green gourmet dip will be exhibited in Berlin on February 8 and 9, after which it will compete with the other finalists for the gold prize.
Produced by Janus Fruit and sold by Anecoop across Europe, the line includes other popular pairings like avocado hummus, traditional and spicy guacamole, organic guacamole, chickpea hummus and Mexican sauce. Here in Spain, brocomole is already being sold by the Carrefour chain of supermarkets.
The innovative dip contains 54% broccoli and 43% avocado and a consumer panel recently rated brocomole highly in terms of appearance, colour, aroma and flavour, with 78% of those surveyed claiming the product would encourage them to eat more broccoli.
Containing 31% fewer calories, 34% less fat and 30% less sugar than traditional guacamole, brocomole is gluten-free, lactose-free and an excellent sourse of fibre, vitamin C and potassium.
President of Anecoop, Alejandro Monzón, described the dip as a “new and healthy alternative for shoppers which already looks set to take the market by storm, since the consumer panel gave it an impressive overall score of 7 out of 10.
The winner of the annual FLIA award will be chosen by an expert panel after the two-day exhibition in Germany, which aims to recognise the most outstanding innovations in the fruit and vegetable supply chain.
