Brutal cockfighting ring dismantled in Murcia
The illegal Fuente Álamo set-up could hold 200 spectators and was shaped like a roulette wheel
The Guardia Civil has brought down an illegal and brutal cockfighting gang in the Murcia town of Fuente Álamo. The arena, which could hold more than 200 people and contained 50 Spanish fighting roosters, was cleverly disguised as a farm warehouse.
After covertly watching the property for some time, officers from the Seprona environmental unit discovered the date of a cockfight and raided the building. Inside, they found a huge fighting ring designed to look like a roulette wheel with a large graduated seating area for spectators known as a ‘tentadero’.
Many of the rescued birds had been mutilated to make them more deadly during the fights, and officers also located almost 40,000 euros in cash, presumably intended for gambling.
The warehouse had video surveillance cameras and was accessed through a path that led to an esplanade where attendees could park. A large room in front of the cockfighting tent had been kitted out as a bar, while the birds were caged out back.
So sophisticated was the set-up that the organisers had even installed a digital scoreboard for the matches and a scale for weighing the animals.
Seprona has arrested two people who they believe to be the ringleaders, and they will be processed for crimes of animal abuse and electricity fraud.
