ARCHIVED - Calpe beach in Alicante closed due to contamination
The red flag has been raised at La Fossa beach in the Marina Alta town on the Costa Blanca

One of Calpe's most popular beaches, La Fossa, has been closed to bathers after high levels of "pollution" were detected.
The red flag was raised at 12.30pm on Wednesday Aguust 31 after analysis carried out by the Department of Environment 24 hours earlier showed concerning levels of contamination prompting a health warning, just a couple of days after a popular Malaga beach was also shut due to the detection of E. coli.
Technicians from the Water Resources Planning and Water Quality Service took further samples on Wednesdy evening, the results of which are expected this afternoon (Thursday).
The council hopes that "the results of this sampling will reflect values in accordance with a water quality suitable for bathing and that the Fossa beach can be opened to swimmers".
In addition, the concessionaire of the water service and management company, Aguas de Calpe, is carrying out analyses and monitoring the situation. The firm stressed that there were no "negative indicators" in water samples taken on Monday August 29.
This is the second time so far this summer that a popular beach in the Marina Alta region of Alicante province, with a high tourist traffic, has been closed due to contamination. Arenal beach in Javea was closed after faecal discharges were detected in the water.
