Camouflaged motorbikes set to patrol Spanish roads this summer
Undercover motorcycle cops will join camouflaged police cars in Spain
In a new effort to cut down on speeding and other dangerous driving, the head of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has announced that undercover motorcycle police will join the camouflaged cop cars on Spanish roads this high season.
"Starting in the summer, there will be camouflaged motorcycles patrolling the roads, so that the motorcyclist who is next to another may be a Guardia Civil officer,” Pere Navarro said this week, adding that there will be more undercover police around at the weekends.
Another measure designed to improve road safety is the addition of more radars and speed cameras: 88 more throughout Spain, to be precise.
“If we compare ourselves with Europe, we have relatively few, but it is not just a question of quantity”.
The DGT boss explained that Spain is moving more towards section radars, which are designed to clock speed at two different points along the same two or three-kilometre stretch. These cameras catch drivers who slam on the brakes once they see a radar, only to speed up again once they’ve passed it.
Navarro has also announced another measure that will be applied in winter when snowfall occurs and which consists of "prohibiting driving or being in the left lane, so that snow ploughs can circulate adding salt, or emergency services."
While the DGT director refused to comment on whether or not tolls would be introduced on dual carriageways in Spain, he did confirm the plan to launch tests for new licence holders wanting to ride 125cc motorcycles.
